SYRIA KEY TO PEACE - BAKER
If the Bush administration opened a dialogue with Syria, it could remove a major roadblock to Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking - Hamas' refusal to recognize the Jewish state - former Secretary of State James Baker said yesterday.

Testifying before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Baker said, "We could get them [Syria] to get Hamas to recognize Israel's right to exist. It would be a huge step in the right direction."

Bush Shoots for "Jaws," Delivers "Jaws 2"
Keith President claimed to stop four terror plots, but where is the evidence?
West Yorkshire in England has a new chief police constable.
his appointment, Sir Norman Bettison made one of the strangest comments of the year:
"The threat of terrorism," he says, "is lurking out there like 'Jaws 2.'"
Sir Norman did not exactly mine the richest ore for his analogy of warning. A critic once said of the flopping sequel to the classic film: "You're gonna need a better screenplay."

Eye on '08: Biden Stumbles Out of the Gate With Backfiring Shots at Dem Rivals
Delaware Sen. Joe Biden said he meant no harm nor racist foul when he cracked wise about Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, one of several fellow Democrats seeking the party's 2008 presidential nomination.

"I believe I was quoted accurately, but they weren't meant to be shots," Biden said of a story published in The New York Observer Wednesday. In it, he is quoted saying of Obama: “I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that’s a storybook, man.”

"My mother has an expression: Clean as a whistle, sharp as a tack. That's the context. He's crisp and clear," Biden said, explaining his comment. More here

Bush: "I don't feel abandoned" on Iraq
President George W. Bush said on Wednesday "I don't feel abandoned" by fellow Republicans in Congress who are working with Democrats to protest his Iraq policy with a congressional resolution.

In a television interview, Bush shrugged off criticism of his plan to send 21,500 more U.S. troops to Iraq and said he hoped lawmakers would give U.S. forces what they needed to get the job done.

It’s turning into an “oh brother” kind of day. The latest news: the “devices” were part of a hare-brained advertising campaign by Turner Broadcasting, promoting the animated show “Aqua Teen Hunger Force.” Read here

Levin And Warner Reach Compromise On Anti-Escalation Resolution
Sens. Carl Levin (D-MI) and John Warner (R-VA) have reached agreement on a compromise bipartisan resolution opposing President Bush’s Iraq escalation policy. Levin and Warner had co-sponsored competing anti-escalation resolutions, both of which risked failing to garner enough votes to break a conservative filibuster. Watch it here

Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK) goes ad hominem on Al Gore. “Al Gore thinks he can use climate change and global warming — he thinks that’s his ticket to the White House,” Inhofe said yesterday at a Senate hearing on climate change.

Congressional leaders agreed yesterday to a $463 billion spending plan for the remainder of the current fiscal year. The spending bill was stripped “of all earmarks, or narrow, special-interest provisions.” “They really delivered on their promise to wipe out earmarks,” said Richard Kogan, a federal budget expert at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. [Maybe this guy hasn't seen the over 111 earmarks to the minimum wage bill] !

The Air Force is “preparing for an expanded role in Iraq that could include aggressive new tactics designed to deter Iranian assistance to Iraqi militants,” including “more forceful patrols by Air Force and Navy fighter planes along the Iran-Iraq border to counter the smuggling of bomb supplies from Iran.

Turning Surge Into Victory When I cracked "1776" on Wednesday to give it its long overdue read, there were two pleasant surprises. I found that it was autographed by the author? Something I am appalled at myself for not remembering. And secondly, alone on the inner leaf just prior to Part One, I was greeted by a simple and profound quote from General George Washington? [Read to find out what he said...link above]

From The Left:
Jason Leopold:
Trial Reveals Wilson Smear Began Far Earlier "The list of officials linked to this case runs from Vice President Dick Cheney right on down to one of his low-level press officers. Testimony has revealed that a coordinated effort was put into place beginning in June 2003 by Cheney, Condoleezza Rice, Karl Rove, Libby, former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer, White House communications director Dan Bartlett, Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley, and as many as a dozen other officials to go after Wilson. In doing so, Wilson's wife's undercover CIA status was compromised, and a possible crime was committed."

Quote Of The Day:
"We are the people who run this country. We are the deciders. And every single day, every single one of us needs to step outside and take some action to help stop this war," "We need people in the streets, banging pots and pans and demanding, 'Stop it, now!'" Molly Ivins (1944-2007), in her Jan. 11 column.
Ivins' best-selling books included those she co-authored with Lou Dubose about Bush. One was titled "Shrub: The Short but Happy Political Life of George W. Bush" and another was "BUSHWHACKED: Life in George W. Bush's America."
